Danish royals shows competitive side in Sydney Harbour yacht race

Danish royals Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Princess Mary have taken to Sydney Harbour on Wild Oats XI in the Big Boat Challenge.

A spokesperson for the eight-times line honours winner confirmed both the prince and princess were aboard the 30m supermaxi for today’s race.

The royal couple was spotted earlier at Woolwich Dock where the boat is based.

Frederik is a keen sailor who competed in the 2005 Farr 40 world championships in Sydney.

He was also aboard Wild Oats XI at this year’s Hamilton Island Race Week.

Hobart-born Princess Mary famously married Frederik in 2004 after meeting him in a Sydney pub during the Olympic Games in 2000.

The couple and their four children will spend Christmas visiting extended family in Tasmania.
