The Wider brand and shipyard in Ancona has been acquired by Monaco-based group Nautical Hybrid Tech, headed up by Marcello Maggi, in partnership with Zepter Group and Hopafi Holding Srl.
Spearheaded by Maggi, the initiative means the co-founder of ISA (International Shipyard Ancona) will once again be building superyachts in his hometown in Italy, although as Wider President and Sales & Marketing Director he will continue to be based in Monaco.
“I’m very thrilled to take this new challenge and honoured to be part of the Wider team,” said Marcello Maggi after concluding the acquisition. “We’re aiming to continue the leadership in hybrid-propulsion yachting, boosting innovation and research in our yachts to come. Wider will be working in a niche segment and focusing on quality and custom-built motor yachts.”
Philip Zepter of the Zepter Group is active in multiple sectors, but the name is associated with various high-tech companies such as Swisso Logical, Bioptron and Tesla Hyperlight Optics.
Hopafi Holding is the investment vehicle of the Giovannetti family. It controls two publicly listed companies in Italy and eastern Europe, as well as interests in companies related to energy and sustainability such as Fintel Energy Group.
“As someone already investing in renewable energy, I firmly believe that the future of yachting is electric,” says Maggi, who is also working with Silent Yachts to build solar-powered catamarans at a shipyard in Marotta near Ancona. “Besides the incredibly high level of the management team and staff, Wider’s eco-friendly soul is what first attracted me to the company. Its hybrid-powered yachts provide extraordinary performance in terms of comfort, noise and vibration.”
The acquisition signals a new chapter for Wider after a long period of uncertainty following the exit of its founder and CEO, Tilli Antonelli, in 2017. Wider made its mark on the industry with the Wider 42 and Wider 32, and followed up with the Wider 150 Bartali (sold in 2016) and Wider 165 Cecilia (for sale at €30,000,000), two award-winning hybrid superyachts. Both vessels set new records with RINA, achieving a perfect score for sound and vibration levels that earned them COMF (Y) 100/100 class notation, never assigned before on motor yachts. RINA also awarded them the RINA Platinum Green Plus Award for their green credentials.
